/ Kocaeli and Ealing TIDE Award Winners!
TIDE has awarded the Innovative Transport Project Award to Kocaeli (Turkey) and the Innovative Transport City Award to London Borough of Ealing (UK).
The Awards recognise and reward local authorities that have shown the courage to introduce innovative and daring measures to meet urban transport challenges in a sustainable andeffective way. Such measures have the potential to become a ‘mainstream’ urban transport policy application in the future.
Innovative Transport Project Award
Local transport policy in Kocaeli focuses on reorganisation of public transport system and integration with non-motorised transport. In this regard, Kocaeli has constructed a 30 km cycle lane and implemented a bike sharing system (KOBIS).
Kocaeli has through a participatory approach consulted with stakeholders from local NGOs, cyclist individuals and local authorities prior to the implementation of KOBIS with 18 stations and 136 bikes in August 2014. Social media and a 24/7 call centre contribute to system optimization and improvement on a daily basis. Following a high demand from citizens, Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality has extended the system with 20 stations and 150 bikes. Kocaeli has collaborated with EMBARQ Turkey within EC funded and other granted projects for benchmarking and knowledge sharing studies.
Innovative Transport City Award
London Borough of Ealing has excellent radial transport links with the centre of London but orbital movement to neighbouring areas is difficult with routes frequently congested with traffic. Encouraging more cycling and public transport use is therefore key to mitigating these issues. To increase road safety, Ealing Council took a proactive lead in developing a new system to deal with road casualties, particularly lorry and cyclist collisions.
The Cycle Safety Shield was delivered in collaboration with commercial and public sector partners during a six month trial period (end of 2013 until mid-2014). During this period the Cycle Safety Shield has potentially stopped 15 serious collisions and improved fuel efficiency and driver behaviour. The Cycle Shield technology is currently being rolled out on Ealing Council’s fleet of Large Goods Vehicles (LGVs), while other council contractors are also implementing these sensors. Negotiations are progressing for the wider take up of this system across Greater London.
Application assessment and selection was carried out by a panel of urban transport experts. TIDE Award winners received a TIDE certificate during the final conference on 15-16 September in Barcelona. Kocaeli and London Borough of Ealing are featuring in the TIDE Study Tour Catalogue, giving EU-wide recognition as well as the opportunity to European cities facing similar challenges to organise peer learning activities.
