Pricing, charging for multimodal journeys
Efficient and convenient pricing and charging for multimodal journeys
In 2011 the European Commission adopted the Roadmap to a Single European Transport Area in which increased mobility and removal of major barriers in key areas are two main objectives. One of the barriers discussed in the roadmap are those which exist between different modes and between different national systems. Better integration of the modal networks is believed to result in better modal choices. To promote more sustainable behavior, the European Commission, stresses the importance of better mobility planning. "Information on all modes of transport, both for travel and freight, on possibilities for their combined use and on their environmental impact, will need to be widely available. Smart inter-modal ticketing, with common EU standards that respect EU competition rules is vital.”
Example 1: Mobility mixx
"Mobility mixx” is a business mobility service provider, which offers companies flexible and intermodal mobility solutions for their employees. "Mobility mixx” provides companies with a full range of transport options to business travelers and simplifies the administration of business travel and improves cost transparency of the organisation. "Mobility mixx” services also include budget control and advise, fiscal information and travel information.
Example 2: Park-and-ride
Park-and-ride facilities are car parks with connections to public transport. People can leave their vehicles and transfer to a bus, rail system or carpool for the remainder of the journey. Park-and-rides are generally located in the suburbs or outer edges of metropolitan areas. Park-and-ride is not a new concept; the first facility was established in the 1960’s in Oxford. However, modern technology can help improve the user friendliness and make it more attractive to utilize these facilities.
Example 3: HANNOVERmobile
The Greater Hannover Transport Association (GVH) started a new service in October 2004, HANNOVERmobile. The service offers full ticket integration of public transit, carsharing and taxi where all of the services will be invoiced with just one monthly "mobility bill”. The customer has instant access to different travel options from which he or she can choose the right service for the given needs at any time. GVH sees this as an opportunity for the public transit provider to move up to become a comprehensive mobility provider; it can be used as a reselling tool for increasing the number of customers, improving the customer loyalty and to broaden the product portfolio by these additional services.
